MinAgri Background
Towards future co-existence of mining and agriculture
Background
The Minerals Council South Africa (MinCoSA) entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Agri SA to work cooperatively in the development and application of mechanisms that will promote and sustain equitable trade-offs between mining and agriculture.
Although mining has a relatively small footprint on total land use in the country, the sterilisation, displacement and resettlement of farmers from mining areas and associated long-term water quality impacts remain a concern. Therefore, the need arises for the mining and agriculture sectors to explore collaboration opportunities with the aim of finding optimal solutions regarding mining methods, land use activities and competition for natural resources.
This project has been initiated as the first step in more accurately defining the extent of co-existence of mining and agriculture, towards being able to identify the required land use solutions.
